OFW and BPO are our new economic heroes

ofw, hero, philippine economy

Current reports that the Philippines export fell down to 3.8% last May due to weak global demand. If we think intently even with the fall of exports, our GDP is one of the highest in Asia. What keeps our economy buoyant thru the economic turmoil? The buoyancy of the Philippine economy are highly attributed to two major factors. OFW remittances account for $28-30 Billion dollars/ year with a 3 – 5% increase yearly regardless of global events and BPO sector that yields $22 – 25 Billion with a yearly increase of 15-18% regardless of global events as stated by Dr Bernard Villegas (economist, author and professor at the University of Asia Pacific)

bpo industry, Philippine economy

Our overseas Filipino workers and BPO employee are sectors that are highly under appreciated. I have much respect for them for I also worked abroad. Imagine for a Filipino to be parted away from their family not by choice but by financial circumstance. In their hopes for financial security they left Philippines to work for foreigners in a foreign land. I would imagine the hardship of adjusting to another language, another country, another culture and unparalleled prejudice. For BPO employees who are not only the technical educators but they are also stress absorbers around the world. They seemed to be payed a high premium for their work but no amount of money is enough for your sacrifice to reverse your internal body clock, sacrifice family time and absorbed the foul language and attitude of your stressed clients.

I would hope that the Government will give them a hero’s courtesy and a better Philippines. The fight against crime and corruption is a good start still I wish financial education can be part of the agenda. I believe education is one of the greatest tool to elevate the Philippines against poverty and against a poverty mindset.

For OFW and BPO employees I give you my respect and prayers. Thank you for the sacrifices you have rendered for our beloved Philippines.
